Sparks Sound super interesting. Going to have to check that out. Funnily enough today I read something about an underclock.
Start at 20. Each dungeon turn roll a d6 and substract. Pass zero trigger encounter. Hit zero exactly you turn to 3. On a 3 a shadow event that foreshadows something happens.
Resting resets all HP BUT increases d6 to d8. Meaning it becomes more dangerous.
I think the author changed it to roll6d6 and on 6 increase a 12 segment clock. Don't know why, I liked the original idea better because it scales better and less dice but still, I liked it
Clocks are great, I really like how they're implemented in Ironsworn Starforged too with the distinction between Tension Clocks, Campaign Clocks and Scene Challenges.

This is an awesome post and a useful one too.
This is seriously cool. I hadn’t heard of the Usage Die before, but I’ve saved it as a potential mechanic for future board games.

I'll have to look at Ironsword. And I know...I felt terrible when he reached out, but we got it edited ;)
Hey there! Long time follower of your newsletter, and what a pleasant surprise to have my game (Everspark) mentioned with such kind words! Thank you!
There was perhaps a small confusion with the editing; my name is actually Cezar Capacle.
But regardless, thank you for the shoutout!
So sorry about the mistake! Not sure how that happened :(. I went in and quickly edited back.
I really do like the Sparks, trying them in my home game this week actually to see how they go.
Appreciate you being a reader. Look forward to talking game design at some point in the future if possible ;)
That'd be a pleasure! :)
Have the clocks not already been in Apocalypse World?
Not sure. FinD was s my first introduction to them. Doesn’t mean it’s first iteration of them
for a historical context on the reducing usage dice, FGU used this in Bushido in the 1980s as die steps to reduce or increase damage.
Another concept to this is the number of D6 rolled for damage in some games.
Cool. So the Usage Die was a damage output thing? Like…was it fatigue of the character or something? I’ll have to look into Bushido
